Setomaa
Discover Setomaa – Drive the Seto Village Belt
The best way to explore Setomaa is by following the “Seto Village Belt”. This specially marked route takes you through the main villages and cultural attractions of the region.
- Official information about the Seto Village Belt: https://www.visitsetomaa.ee/en/seto-village-belt
- Downloadable map: Seto Village Belt map (PDF)
Our Recommended One-Day Setomaa Itinerary:
- Morning Start in Põlva: We recommend starting your day in Põlva. Enjoy a relaxed late breakfast at Tillu Café, known for serving some of Estonia’s largest cinnamon rolls.
- Exploring Värska:
Continue to Värska, where you can stroll along the river promenade and visit the cosy café near the bridge.
In Värska, you can also explore the Seto Farm Museum, where traditional Seto clothing, rural architecture, and authentic Seto cuisine are showcased.
It is also worth visiting the Reegi House Museum – a beautifully preserved wooden home of a former officer. - Vana Jüri Soap Workshop (Open in Summer Season):
On the way toward Saatse, you will find Vana Jüri Soap Workshop by the roadside. Located in a charming village, it is worth a stop even if you are not planning to buy soap.
- Piusa Sand Caves:
The Village Belt route continues to the famous Piusa Sand Caves, where sand was once mined for glass production. Today, the site operates as a museum. Visitors can explore a small section of the caves and also visit the Soviet-era glass art exhibition.
- Obinitsa – Cuisine and Culture:
Obinitsa is another key village of Setomaa, home to a small museum and a historic church. Here you will find two excellent dining options:
- The authentic local restaurant Taarka Tarõ (highly recommended by our guests).
- The recently opened Ilmaveere Restaurant, a modern dining place known from the TV series “Lenna and Lauri at Ilmaveere”.
- Local Products and Vastseliina:
If you would like to purchase local Setomaa dairy products and cheese, you can stop at Nopri Farm Shop, located between Misso and Vastseliina. It is a self-service shop offering fresh farm products.
In Vastseliina, you can also visit the impressive ruins of the Vastseliina Episcopal Castle, which make for an interesting historical stop.
We are confident that while exploring these places, you will discover many more hidden gems along the way.
If you feel one day is not enough to experience it all, you are always welcome to stay at Saarjärve for another night.
